HISTORY

In Greek mythology, it is said that the beautiful Aphrodite was once fast asleep on a hill. Her son, Cupid, amused himself by clipping the nails off the tip of one of his arrows. The nails of the goddess of love, carried by a gentle breeze, became stranded in a river and were transformed into onyx stones by the pine trees.

Onyx has been considered a protective stone throughout history. In Mesopotamia, it protected female warriors by decorating their armor. The Persians used it to ward off the evil eye.

In the Middle Ages, onyx was associated, due to its color, with negative elements such as anger, hatred, and evil spells. However, there were references in the Bible to this protective stone, given by the Lord to Moses when he built a sanctuary for him.

It was from Roman times onward that the stone became very popular for making cameos, very fine pendants depicting nobles and aristocrats. This practice was continued by many Kings of France who were very fond of this stone.
