Sodalite is a stone of understanding, both of ourselves and the world around us. There are different varieties of sodalite; it is said that white-veined sodalite brings even more light to the mind.
HISTORY
In the Middle Ages, sodium, extracted from a plant, was a well-known remedy for headaches. We find this beneficial effect with sodalite.
The first discoveries of sodalite date back to the early 19th century, but this stone wasn't necessarily unknown before then. In ancient times, the Egyptians and other Mediterranean civilizations made extensive use of lapis lazuli, which came from the same geographical area as the sodalite mines that are still in operation today.
Around 2000 BC, a civilization in northern Peru used sodalite crystals in their rituals. Sodalite fragments were found in the excavation area, as well as quartz fragments in small offerings.
It was in the 19th century, during a visit to Canada's mineral capital, that Mary, Princess of Wales, fell in love with Sodalite and brought large quantities back to England to decorate her castle and make it popular in jewelry and watchmaking.
