HISTORY

Named Labradorite by Foster in 1780, the stone takes its name from the Labrador region of Canada, where it was first discovered. That said, labradorite has been known to the Inuit people of northern Canada for many centuries. For them, labradorite was actually the aurora borealis trapped in the rock, before someone broke the rock to release the trapped lights that were making their way to the sky. However, some of these lights remained in the stones as sparkling gems.
