Named labradorite by Foster in 1780, the stone takes its name from the Labrador region of Canada, where it was first discovered. However, labradorite has been known to the Inuit of northern Canada for many centuries. For the Inuit, labradorite was actually the aurora borealis trapped in the rock, before a man broke the rock to release the trapped lights that made their way into the sky. However, some of these lights remained in the stones as glittering gems.
