Zirconia

Properties of Zirconia

Zirconia is a silicate mineral composed of naturally occurring zirconium silicate with the chemical formula ZrSiO4 . It is believed to have formed 4.4 billion years ago, coinciding with the birth of our planet, making it one of the oldest known stones.

In its natural state, cubic zirconia typically ranges in color from yellow to brown. However, through heat treatment, it can become transparent, blue, gold, or black, depending on the temperature applied. Considered a precious stone in jewelry, it is also known as the "matura diamond" by specialists. Despite its lower resistance to impact and pressure, cubic zirconia has been used as a cost-effective alternative to diamond.

This stone belongs to the trigonal crystal system. Its cleavage is imperfect, its fracture is conchoidal, and its line ranges in color from gray to white. With a density of 3.9 to 4.8 and a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, it is a relatively durable stone.

The main deposits of zirconia are located in the United States, South Africa, India, Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) and Australia.

History of Zircon

The etymological origin of the term "zirconia" is not universally accepted. According to some theories, it comes from the Arabic "zarqun" (cinnabar), while others suggest a Persian origin in "zargun," meaning "golden-colored." Some specialists also propose a Greek origin.

Historically, zirconia has been somewhat undervalued due to its use as a diamond substitute. However, this perception should not overshadow the beauty and uniqueness of this stone. Although it is one of the oldest known gemstones, it does not appear to have played a prominent role in the great ancient civilizations.

Among the exceptions, Hindus include zirconia in the mythical Kalpa tree, composed of various precious stones. In other traditions, it is associated with names like "hyacinth" (likely an ancient term for zircon) or with supernatural figures, such as the angel Zircon in Jewish tradition.

Currently, in addition to its use in jewelry, zirconia has industrial applications, especially in the nuclear industry, where it is used to operate reactors and manufacture sarcophagi for radioactive waste.
