Properties of Tourmaline
Tourmaline is a gemstone belonging to the silicate family, specifically the cyclosilicate group. Its crystal system is trigonal, which explains its characteristic rod or needle shape with a triangular cross-section and convex faces. It has a vitreous luster and a hardness ranging from 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale.
The main tourmaline deposits are found in Brazil. However, depending on the type or color, it is also mined in other regions: Madagascar (rubellite tourmalines), Russia (Siberian tourmalines), and Afghanistan (indicolithic tourmalines). India, Myanmar, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka are other countries that produce this gemstone.

History of Tourmaline
The term "tourmaline" comes from the Sinhalese word Thuramali , which is commonly translated as "stone of mixed colors." It is believed that the word was brought to Europe by Dutch sailors in the 18th century. Although few ancient texts mention tourmaline, it was often confused with other similar stones. Some specialists believe that in ancient times it was known as "Ionian stone."
In Europe, tourmaline was relatively unknown, but it was highly prized in the Middle East and the Far East. Craftspeople used it to create intricate artistic artifacts, such as figurines of deities and Buddhas. The ladies and empresses of the Chinese imperial court were particularly fond of this stone. In France, due to its electrical and electrostatic properties, tourmaline was known as the "Ceylon magnet."
