Onyx
Properties of onyx
Onyx is one of those gems whose allure has made it a great success among lovers of exceptional stones. Onyx belongs to the agate family and is a variety of chalcedony composed primarily of silicon dioxide. It has a trigonal crystal system with conchoidal fracture. Onyx has a vitreous luster, a density of 2.65 to 2.66, and a relatively high hardness of approximately 7 on the Mohs scale.
Onyx can appear in a polychromatic coloration, with alternating black and white circular stripes around a darker core (this stone is called "eye onyx"). Onyx also has a monochromatic coloration, meaning it is entirely black. This type of natural coloration is highly prized in jewelry, distinguishing this natural stone from artificially dyed chalcedony.
The most notable onyx deposits are found in Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, Madagascar, India, and the United States.
History of Onyx
The most commonly accepted origin of the word onyx comes from the ancient Greek "Onux," meaning "nail." This etymology is rooted in Greek mythology, specifically in the myth of onyx creation. Legend tells that Cupid, visiting the goddess Aphrodite while she slept, cut his nails with the tip of one of his arrows. The pieces of the goddess's nails that fell to the ground were transformed into onyx stones by the Fates, because in Greek belief, what comes from the gods cannot be corrupted.
For the Romans, onyx was the ideal material for engraving seals. This was mainly due to its property of not sticking to the wax used to seal the letters and inscriptions of the time. In the Middle Ages, however, onyx was one of those stones that acquired a bad reputation.
According to the old popular belief that the color and appearance of an object reflected its nature, it's easy to imagine the reasons for the negative connotations associated with this black stone at the time. It must be said that onyx is perhaps one of the most controversial stones in history. While it was considered an evil stone by some cultures, such as the Chinese, it was, conversely, seen as protective and beneficial by others, such as the Indians.
Benefits of onyx
Far removed from the dark medieval beliefs surrounding it, onyx is considered one of the most beneficial stones and a powerful remedy in lithotherapy. Onyx has numerous healing properties. In addition to strengthening the cardiovascular system, it is said to cleanse the spleen and kidneys and strengthen the nerves.
Onyx is also known for its benefits to the ears, strengthening them and aiding in healing from infections. Applying onyx stone to the solar plexus tones the pancreas. It is believed to benefit people who have suffered physical or psychological trauma and continue to suffer from it long after the event. Onyx is the stone that can help overcome the aftermath of life's hardships and move forward.
