Magnesite
The properties of magnesite
As a member of the mineral family, magnesite is essentially composed of magnesium carbonate with inclusions of iron, manganese, calcium, cobalt, nickel, and some organic compounds.
Depending on the type and density of impurities present, magnesite can be white, gray, yellowish (and in rare cases, green), or brown. Its crystal system is trigonal with a rhombohedral lattice. A brittle stone, magnesite has a hardness of around 4 on the Mohs scale, and its luster is vitreous and dull.
The most notable magnesite deposits are found mainly in Brazil, and in several European countries such as Spain, France, Germany, and Austria.

History of Magnosite
To date, there are no known historical records that prove the importance or use of magnesite in antiquity. The first description of the stone dates back to 1808 by the German scientist Dietrich Ludwig Gustav Karsten. Magnesite owes its name primarily to its main chemical component: magnesium.
Magnesite has been widely exploited in industry as a base mineral for the extraction of magnesium and its derivatives, such as magnesium oxide, or magnesium carbonate, which is widely used by the pharmaceutical industry as a food additive.
