Labradorite

Properties of Labradorite

Considered one of the most beautiful stones, labradorite is a mineral belonging to the silicate group. The main characteristic of labradorite is that it combines a wide range of colors in a single stone. Its vitreous luster gives the stone a metallic appearance. Green, blue, pale yellow, or even gold, orange, colorless, or even black—such a wide palette in such a small stone. The hardness of labradorite is approximately 7 on the Mohs scale.

The most notable labradorite deposits are found primarily in Canada, the United States, Madagascar, France, and Russia. Labradorite is mainly used in jewelry making, where it is often cut into cabochons.

History of Labradorite

Named Labradorite by Foster in 1780, the stone takes its name from the Labrador region of Canada, where it was first discovered. That said, labradorite has been known to the Inuit people of northern Canada for many centuries. For them, labradorite was actually the aurora borealis trapped in the rock, before someone broke the rock to release the trapped lights that were making their way to the sky. However, some of these lights remained in the stones as sparkling gems.

Other legends link labradorite to Atlantis, suggesting that the stone held a special allure for the descendants of the survivors who originated from the legendary continent swallowed by the waves. From the 19th century onward, labradorite became a highly prized and fashionable gemstone, particularly for adorning jewelry inspired by ancient Egyptian and Greco-Roman art.
