Heliotrope
Properties of Heliotrope
The color of heliotrope ranges from blackish to greenish, with patches of red jasper reminiscent of blood droplets, hence its other name: "bloodstone." It is a mixture of quartz and chalcedony crystallized with iron silicates. Plasma-based heliotrope should not be confused with green jasper, which gets its color from detrital quartz mixed with chlorite.
The main deposits of heliotrope are located in Germany, Brazil, the United States, China, India, Australia and Zimbabwe.
History of the Heliotrope
The name "heliotrope" comes from Greek and literally means "turned toward the sun." It is also called "blood jasper" because, in the Middle Ages, it was believed that this stone contained the blood of Jesus Christ, as it was supposedly present on the ground where the crucifix was erected. This explains the extraordinary powers attributed to heliotrope.
In ancient times, the heliotrope was widely valued for its esoteric properties. Submerged in water and exposed to sunlight, its red spots became even more radiant, transforming it into a catalyst for manipulating the weather or summoning storms.
Heliotrope was believed to have healing properties, helping to treat tumors, wounds, and even poison bites by placing the stone on the wound to "absorb" the poison. It is important to note that these are ancient practices and that using the stone is not a substitute for immediate medical attention, although it could have been used as a supportive measure until treatment could be received.
