The emerald is the most famous and prized gemstone after the ruby ​​and the diamond. It comes in all shades, from green to deep green, including pale green and bluish-green.

Its chemical composition is beryllium aluminum silicate; it belongs to the beryllium family. The coloring agents in emeralds are chromium and iron.

Its crystal system is hexagonal. And its hardness is around 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale.

The main emerald deposits are located in Australia, Brazil, Colombia, India, Madagascar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Tanzania and the United States.

Its name comes from the Latin "smaragdus" which is a distortion of the Persian word "zamarat" which means heart of stone.

The emerald has been known since ancient Egypt and has been used throughout civilizations, from the Roman and Greek civilizations to the Middle Ages and up to the present day. The stone was well-known in antiquity and was often associated with the goddesses Venus and Vesta. In ancient Egypt, it gave its name to the famous Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus (or the god Thoth), which supposedly contained the knowledge and the cause of all things.
