Properties of Kyanite

Properties of Kyanite

Kyanite, also known as disthene, is a silicate mineral with the chemical formula Al₂SiO₅. This metamorphic mineral often contains traces of metals such as iron, magnesium, calcium, and chromium.

Kyanite exhibits a wide range of colors, including colorless, black, white, gray, green, blue, pink, and yellow. Its crystal system is triclinic, it has an incomplete fracture, a white streak, and a luster that can be vitreous or pearly. It is a stone that varies from transparent to translucent, with a density of 3.53 to 3.65.

A unique characteristic of kyanite is its anisotropic hardness. In the direction of elongation, it has a hardness of approximately 7.5, but this decreases to 4.5 in the perpendicular direction (Mohs scale).

The most important kyanite deposits are located in Brazil, the United States, Canada, Italy, France, and Nepal.

History of Kyanite

The name disthène was coined by René-Just Haüy and derives from the Greek di (two) and sthenos (strength), referring to the anisotropic properties of the stone.

The term kyanite was proposed by Abraham Gottlob Werner, inspired by the Greek word kuanos (blue). The stone is also known as saparela, blue talc, or kyanite zeolite.

Due to its fragility, kyanite is rarely used in jewelry. However, in some Central Asian cultures, spectacular pieces are crafted from this stone, although they require protection from impacts and friction that could irreparably damage it. Currently, kyanite is usually cut into rectangular crystals or cabochons for collectors and enthusiasts.
