Properties of Chiastolite
Chiastolite is a variety of andalusite, a mineral from the silicate group. Its chemical formula is Al₂SiO₅.
This stone contains dark-colored carbon or clay inclusions, which often form a cross in its cross-section, a characteristic that gives it its name. Its colors vary between gray, pink, yellow, and brown. Its crystal system is orthorhombic, it has a white streak, a vitreous or dull greasy luster, and a density of 3.12 to 3.16. It has a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale.
The main deposits of chiastolite are found in Chile, Brazil, Spain, France and Russia.

History of Chiastolite
The name "chiastolite" comes from the ancient Greek word kiastos , meaning "marked with a cross." In antiquity, it was also known as "macle," derived from the Latin word macula , meaning "stain."
Archaeological discoveries on the Iberian Peninsula suggest that chiastolite was known since prehistoric times. It was described by the Spanish Jesuit naturalist José Torrubia in the 18th century.
Chiastolite was popular as an amulet among pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela. In Chile, the stone is associated with Mapuche myths that consider it to be the fruit of a young woman's tears, transformed into stone by the goddess Pachamama.
