History of aventurine

The name aventurine itself, derived from the Latin word "adventura" (that which must happen or will occur), dates back to 17th-century northern Italy, according to the commonly accepted story. At that time, in the Veneto region, glassmakers may have invented it intentionally or accidentally; sources disagree on this point. It was a new technique involving the random or "per adventura" scattering of copper flakes or filings of certain metals, such as brass, into glass paste. The term "aventurine" then came to be generalized to any manufactured or natural object composed of shiny specks, which is how aventurine acquired its name.
