Aquamarine
Properties of Aquamarine
Aquamarine is a silicate mineral and a variety of beryl. It has a magnificent luster reminiscent of the sea, ranging from transparent to translucent. Iron oxidation gives aquamarine its blue or green color. Mineral inclusions lend the stone a dazzling, shimmering, or star-like effect. The darkest shade, called deep lagoon, is the most popular today. Aquamarine has a hardness of approximately 7.5/8 on the Mohs scale.
This gemstone is found in granite rocks. It is also found in alluvial deposits. Aquamarine is found primarily in Brazil, where there are high-quality stones that display unusual patterns inlaid with a deep blue hue.
The most beautiful marine aquamarines are found in Pakistan, but limitations in extraction and transport make them very rare in the West. Other African countries such as Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Nigeria, as well as Madagascar, have enormous aquamarine deposits.
History of aquamarine
Pliny said: "the most beautiful dangers are those that imitate seawater" and this is the case of Aquamarine, whose name comes from the Latin "Aqua Marina", which literally means "seawater".
The stone has been prized since ancient times. In those days, it was highly valued for its ability to protect sailors from the wrath of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. According to Greek mythology, aquamarine came ashore after falling from the treasures of the nymphs.
In the Middle Ages, aquamarine was believed to possess divinatory powers. To predict the future, a diviner would hold an aquamarine crystal on the end of a wire, suspended above the surface of a bowl of water. The rim of this bowl was marked with different letters of the alphabet, which the stone would strike to reveal answers about the afterlife. Alternatively, one could attempt to read the future by observing the ripples on the surface of the water into which an aquamarine crystal had been tossed.
