Properties of Moss Agate

Moss agate is a special stone that, technically, isn't an agate in the strictest sense. It's a colorless, sometimes white, chalcedony containing inclusions of other chemical elements such as silicate (green), magnesium and iron oxide (brown to red), or chlorite. These inclusions create patterns that resemble moss, hence the stone's name.

The moss inclusions within the stone display a variety of colors, from black and brown to green and red. Moss agate has a luster that can range from matte to silky or vitreous, belongs to the trigonal crystal system, and exhibits uneven fracture. Its density is 2.6 and its hardness ranges from 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.

The main deposits of moss agate are found in Brazil, Madagascar, Switzerland, Italy, Russia, India, China and Australia.

History of Moss Agate

Thanks to its plant patterns, moss agate symbolizes fertility and agricultural abundance in many cultures.

In Ancient Greece, it was believed to preserve mental balance and attract the favor of the Olympian gods. In Egypt and the Middle East, it was used on mummies and statues of gods to give the eyes a lifelike appearance.

Some Native American cultures believed that moss agate influenced the weather, attracting rain. In the Middle Ages, hanging moss agate on a tree bark was considered a ritual to ensure good harvests. These traditions made moss agate a protective amulet and bringer of good fortune. Today, it is popular as a pendant or in gem-set jewelry.
