The agate family comprises several types of quartz, including crazy lace agate, also known as Mexican agate. Its distinctive feature lies in its mix of colors, ranging from white, yellow, gray, and red to bluish tones. Like all agates, its chemical formula is SiO₂. Successive deposits of metals and other materials give it its unique hues and characteristic interlacing of layers and lines.
Crazy lace agate has a trigonal crystal system, a vitreous luster, a density of 2.65, and a hardness ranging from 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Its formation dates back to the Cretaceous period, between 65 and 90 million years ago. The main deposits of this stone are located in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico.
History of Crazy Lace Agate
The official discovery of crazy lace agate dates back to 1895, when it was first recorded. However, it remained forgotten until the 1950s, when it was accidentally rediscovered during highway construction. From then on, its use and exploitation increased.
Archaeological evidence indicates that the Native American peoples of Central America were already familiar with crazy lace agate thousands of years ago. In Aztec rituals, the stone was especially valued for its structure and reddish tones, which symbolized blood, a central element in their cults and rituals. It was used to gain favor or appease the gods of their pantheon. Today, crazy lace agate is popular as an ornamental stone in jewelry.
